The SMILING CROCODILE kindergarten and elementary school for children with multiple disabilities offers education and care to children with various types of multiple disabilities and disadvantages.
Who is the kindergarten intended for:
We accept children with severe multiple disabilities, including those with progressive forms of disability or a terminal diagnosis. If there is free capacity, we also accept children with milder types of disability.
Educational program:
We teach according to the School Education Plan, which is based on the Framework Education Plan of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports for kindergartens. However, each child also has their own individual education plan.
We adapt education to the level of mental and physical development of children and provide the highest level of support.
Team and support:
The children are taught by experienced special education teachers with the support of assistants and regular volunteers. There is also a nurse at the kindergarten. We also use recommendations and cooperation with school counseling facilities, early care, doctors, and other professionals who care for the children
Communication:
We develop all forms of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) and also use sign language. The kindergarten is linguistically open—in addition to Czech, the staff also speaks English, and some also speak German, Russian, and Spanish.
Special education and integration:
Teaching is very experiential and multisensory (we engage and develop the senses), combined with music therapy, drama therapy, intensive communication and speech therapy development, elements of occupational therapy and art activities, sports activities, fun English, and a multicultural overview. We focus on a playful form of teaching supplemented with elements of humor. We have excellent technical equipment: we use digital whiteboards, iPads with various educational applications, a 3D environment, and the Tobbi program for children to communicate using eye movements.
Part of the intensive integration program is cooperation with regular elementary schools and seniors. We have our own school band and theater troupe. We introduce children to the world around them—practicing riding public transportation, shopping, frequent trips, cooking, DIY, and gardening. As part of their education, we strive for the greatest possible independence for children and their integration into mainstream society. Connectivity and cooperation with our children's families is also important to us.
Physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and physical education:
The children exercise regularly under the guidance of physiotherapists. The rehabilitation rooms are equipped with a hydromassage bath, a Vojta table, a special bath bed, a motomed, balancing aids, and more. Group exercises, stretching, proper breathing training, and, for children who need it, basal and orofacial stimulation and children's massages also take place in classrooms and our gym.
Daily routine and lifestyle:
Active and relaxation blocks alternate throughout the day, and we take care not to overwork the children. We include outdoor activities, and meals are balanced and prepared by an external supplier. Drinks are provided throughout the day. We are able to provide children with food via PEG, as well as offer blended or liquid diets.
Adaptation regime:
The transition to kindergarten can be gradual, as agreed with the parents. We recommend that parents be present during the adaptation period.
Atmosphere and values:
We promote self-confidence, independence, mutual assistance, and responsibility. We create a safe environment for all children.
